CAD / Drafting Technology Program Details

Drafting is the process of turning ideas of how things should be constructed into drawings. These drawings, which are based upon sketches and calculations made by engineers, surveyors, architects or scientists, provide visual guidelines such as dimensions, materials to be used, and procedures to be followed. Before CAD (Computer Aided Drafting), drafters sat at drawing boards and used pencils, pens, compasses, protractors, triangles, and other drafting devices to prepare a drawing manually. Now, most drafters use CAD to create drawings on a screen. This way, drafters can make revisions quickly and easily.

Although drafters use CAD extensively, it is only a tool. Persons who produce technical drawings using CAD still function as drafters, and need to possess the knowledge of traditional drafters. CAD drawings can be used to build everything from manufactured products, such as toys, toasters, industrial machinery, or spacecraft, to structures, such as houses, office buildings, or oil and gas pipelines.

Computer Networking & Security Program Details- A lot of different occupations fall under Computer Networking & Security, but above all, people who work in this field are specialists who provide the day-to-day administration, maintenance, support and protection of computer systems and networks. These occupations include:

Network Security Specialists-It's their job to plan, coordinate and implement network security measures to make sure a company's computer network is not vulnerable to computer security threats. They're in charge of things like intrusion detection, encryption, cryptography, wireless security, biometrics, SPAM and virus protection, authentication and computer forensic techniques.

Technical Support Specialists-They assist a company's employees with computer problems, and install, modify, clean and repair computer hardware, software and peripherals. They may answer phone calls, write training manuals and/or train computer users how to properly use their equipment. They may also monitor the performance of their company's computer systems and evaluate software programs for usefulness.

Help-Desk Technicians- They primarily field telephone calls and e-mail messages from customers who have technical problems. Their job entails asking questions to diagnose the problem, and then walking the customer through the problem-solving steps. These technicians are consulted for information about what gives customers the most trouble as well as their concerns. Many technical computer support specialists start out as help-desk technicians.

Network or Computer Systems Administrators- They are responsible for the efficient use of networks by organizations. They design, install and support an organization's LAN, WAN, network segment, Internet or Intranet. They also maintain network hardware and software and monitor the network to ensure availability to system users. They gather data to determine customer needs and then identify, interpret and evaluate system and network requirements.

Electronics Technology Program Details- Those who work in Electronics Technology primarily install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair electronic equipment. They also diagnose and repair problems caused by mechanical or electrical malfunctions in individual electronic units and in complex systems such as local area networks (LANS) and industrial controllers. They deal with the analysis and troubleshooting of analog and digital circuits.

When electronic equipment breaks down, repairers first check for common causes of trouble. They use a number of diagnostic tools to determine potential malfunctions, including software. They also use hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, soldering irons, and wrenches to replace faulty parts and to adjust equipment. They also perform preventive maintenance on a regular basis.

This equipment may include computers, consumer electronics like radios and telephones), and industrial, biomedical, avionics and office equipment.

Electronics technicians are usually employed with automotive manufacturers, industrial automation companies, business machine service companies, telephone companies, hospitals, aircraft service companies, radio and TV service companies, instrumentation sales, robotics repair companies, and maintenance companies.

Graphic Design & Animation Program Details- People in this profession create or design things on computers. Though this sounds simple enough, their work often requires them to know several different software programs in order to edit or create images, graphics, sounds and video files, websites, 3D images, CD's and multimedia presentations.

Upon graduation, you will be qualified to work as a Desktop Publisher, a Web Applications Analyst, a Web Developer, a Multimedia Graphic Designer/Artist, a Graphic Web Developer, a Multimedia Specialist or a Website Coordinator.

A web designer is ultimately responsible for the way a website looks. He or she decides how pages will be laid out, what colors will be used, and how text will be arranged. Part of a Web Designer's job also involves converting existing text and graphics (like logos) to an Internet-ready format.

Developers create fully interactive websites using electronic publishing technologies such as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). While designers establish the look and feel for a website, a web developer writes the code that puts them together to make them function.

Desktop publishers combine colors, shapes, images and text to produce print-ready material. This involves creating graphics, converting photographs and drawings into digital images and designing page layouts. Materials produced by desktop publishers include books, business cards, advertisements, brochures, magazines, packaging, and more.

Presentations you see on the web or on a CD are the work of multimedia developers. They combine text, photographs, images, sound clips and video files to produce interactive, feature-rich multimedia projects.

Medical Assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks in the offices and clinics of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors and optometrists. In small practices, they are "generalists," who handle both administrative and clinical duties and report directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner. Those in large practices tend to specialize in a particular area under the supervision of department administrators.

Medical Assistants perform many administrative duties. They answer telephones, greet patients, update and file patient medical records, fill out insurance forms, handle correspondence, schedule appointments, arrange for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handle billing and bookkeeping.

Clinical duties vary according to state law, and may include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination. Medical Assistants collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises, dispose of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical instruments.
