    Information on Programs Offered:

    Dental Assistants work directly with the patient and dentist in chair-side procedures and perform dental office administrative duties.

    Apollo College Dental Assistant program will prepare the student to work as a Dental Assistant, Front Office Receptionist, or Dental Office Manager in governmental agencies, private dental practices, and hospitals that include dental health care.

     

    Trained and certified Dental Hygienists teach patients how to practice good oral hygiene, remove calculus, stains, and plaque from teeth, take and develop dental x-rays, and much more. This popular program has recently expanded and is now offered at the Portland, Oregon campus.

    Graduates will also be prepared to take national written and regional clinical exams leading to licensure. Career opportunities for graduates include: clinical positions in dental offices, public health agencies, hospitals and community dental clinics; educational and administrative positions; and research and marketing of dental-related products.

    Job prospects are expected to remain excellent, as employment of Dental Hygienists is anticipated to grow 30% through 2016, much faster than average for all occupations. While wages may vary by region, as of May 2006, median hourly earnings of dental hygienists were $30.19.*

    Apollo College now offers a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (DMS) certificate program that prepares students for a rewarding career in ultrasound technology. This comprehensive, 16 month (4 semester) program, focuses on all aspects of general ultrasound including abdominal, pelvic, and obstetric anatomy and pathology.

    Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to increase by about 19 percent through 2016 — faster than average for all occupations—as the population ages, increasing the demand for diagnostic imaging and therapeutic technology*. Graduates of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Apollo College may also be prepared to sit for three registry exams: Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation, Abdomen and Obstetrics/Gynecology.

    Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a highly specialized field of medical imaging and is highly operator dependent. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers will typically perform patient assessments, acquire and analyze data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies. They will provide a summary of findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management and use independent judgment and systematic problem solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.

    Fitness Trainers work in health clubs, Fitness Studios, rehab facilities or independently as Personal Trainers.

    Personal trainers guide and motivate clients to reach their peak fitness potential.

    They assess the fitness needs of clients and develop plans based on them. Personal trainers provide personal training, present classes and instruct on proper nutrition.

    Personal trainers must have a strong understanding of the functions and vital processes of the human body so they can effectively design and deliver personal nutrition and physical fitness training programs. Creativity and determination are important characteristics of Fitness Trainers.

    A good personal trainer must be energetic and motivating, always encouraging their clients to reach their maximum performance.

    Personal trainers must continually strive to understand advances in the industry and stay current with new equipment and techniques.

    Flexible hours and a fun work environment make the Fitness Trainer program a healthy career move.

    The Massage Therapist Diploma program combines a complete and comprehensive study of Swedish Massage with other manual and energetic therapies. Supporting courses include a thorough kinesthetic and tactile study of Human Anatomy and Physiology, Professional Ethics and Communication, and the Business of Massage. 

    According to recent job analysis data, a massage therapist should be competent in the following: display a passion for the profession, employ appropriate communication skills, design and implement a massage session, manage the business of a massage practice, manage the critical components of a massage practice, maintain self-care and wellness program, promote the profession, and acquire knowledge, skills and credentials.

     

    The Medical Administrative Assistant Program includes two broad aspects. The first encompasses secretarial skills, manual office systems, and an introduction to microcomputers. 

    This phase of the program includes; medical law and ethics, medical terminology used in professional practice, essential office skills, and areas of medicine critical to office practice. The second phase of the program teaches the knowledge and skills to master computer software and systems commonly used in medical practice. The student will develop proficiency in word processing, accounting methods, spreadsheets, and database management.

    Medical Assistants aid the physician and other medical personnel as they examine and treat patients. Medical Assistants perform office administrative tasks that keep a medical office or clinic running smoothly.

    Graduates are prepared to work in physicians' offices, clinics, nursing homes, and health care centers as a medical secretary, medical assistant, medical receptionist, or medical office manager.

     

    Medical Billing and Coding Specialists maintain accurate, organized and permanent documentation of medical care to provide data for a variety of health information needs. Accurate and timely health care data are necessary to evaluate, plan, and deliver quality health care. 

    The medical world depends on health information management professionals to collect, maintain, organize, and interpret this data.

     

    Medical Laboratory Technicians are trained in performing various laboratory procedures and in determining the outcome of those tests and procedures. In addition, Medical Laboratory Technicians are taught the various body systems in relationship to tests and procedures that the technician will perform.

    Medical Laboratory Technicians often work directly with patients, but may work in a laboratory environment where little or no patient contact is required.

     

    Healthcare offices, like business offices of all types, require trained and skilled personnel to provide day-to-day leadership and management for a variety of challenges ranging from managing and supervising personnel to planning and implementing office procedures to developing office policies and assuring customer service. The Apollo College MOM program provides this education in critical business and management to those who have already been trained in the technical aspects of an allied health field.

    Prerequisite for entry into the Medical Office Management program includes successfully completion of an allied health program at an accredited college or university consisting of at least 720 hours of study and 30 semester credits. Thus, the candidate for the Medical Office Management Associate degree enters the degree program with the specialized knowledge and skill in an allied health field necessary to work in an entry level position. The Medical Office Management associate degree adds general education and business management courses that prepare the graduate for managerial/supervisory positions of higher responsibility in their health care field or in related health care businesses.

    Applicants for enrollment in the Medical Office Management program must provide an official transcript evidencing graduation from an on-ground, allied health education program accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. The transcript must show that a minimum of thirty semester credits of study were successfully completed with a passing grade. Applicants to the online program must also complete an assessment to determine their readiness for the rigors of online instruction.

    The Pharmacy Technician program at Apollo College provides the technical and practical training to allow the graduate to work as an assistant to a licensed pharmacist in both retail and hospital settings.

    The program provides the student with extensive knowledge in pharmaceutical and medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols used in prescribing, dispensing and charting of medications and a working knowledge of drug trade and generic names as well as strengths, dosages, dosage forms and routes of administration.

    Administrative skills and law and ethics are also emphasized. Reading comprehension, pharmacy mathematics, use of the calculator, and good verbal and written communication skills are functionally taught throughout the course. Upon completion of all classroom instruction and practical training, students perform learned skills during a 260-hour externship in a hospital, retail pharmacy, or pharmaceutical distributor.

     

    Physical Therapist is one of the most fulfilling professions in the medical field. Every day, in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and other health care facilities, Physical Therapist Technicians help patients recover from illnesses and injuries. Whether its treatment programs that restore muscle function, relieve pain, or prevent disability following disease, injury or loss of body parts, Physical Therapist plays a vital role in improving the lives of patients. The rewarding work of Physical Therapist can include a wide range of treatments, from isometric and ambulatory exercise programs to ultrasound and massage therapies - all to promote physical as well as emotional recovery. Through Apollo College's comprehensive program, you may also receive instruction as a fully qualified Personal Trainer, offering additional careers in the fitness industry and further opportunities to improve life, health and well-being.

    Physical Therapy Technician assist the Physical Therapist in helping patients recover from illnesses and injuries. They assist in the physical therapy treatment plan for patients in order to restore muscle function, relieve pain, and prevent disability following disease, injury, or loss of body parts. 

    A Physical Therapy Technician may aid in a therapy treatment program that may include exercise, electrical stimulation, ultrasound and massage therapy. They also instruct and motivate patients in isometric and ambulatory exercises.

     

    Respiratory care is one of the fastest growing specialties in the medical field and among the most rapidly expanding, in-demand occupations in any industry. As the percentage of middle-aged and elderly in the population continues to increase, so does the incidence of respiratory and cardiopulmonary conditions. There is and will continue to be a growing need for qualified Respiratory Therapists to provide care and treatment to patients in the years to come.

    Apollo College's nationally accredited Respiratory Care program is designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to meet the demand for these highly trained specialists. Through classroom lecture, laboratory experience and clinical instruction, the program helps prepare students to meet nationally accepted standards. And, as the role of Respiratory Therapists expands to include disease prevention, emergency care and other vital functions, Apollo College graduates will be ready to fulfill the growing opportunities.

    The Veterinary Assistant Program is intended to train individuals to gain knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform in a veterinary office. The student will learn to provide nursing for animals under the direction of the veterinarian. Students will learn all aspects of assisting in the operation of a veterinary practice. 

    They will learn the basics of first aid, anatomy, routine care, emergency care, surgical preparation and basic nursing techniques. They will learn how animals communicate, animal behavior, training, breeding and the life cycles of young, adult, and old animals. Students will learn teamwork and how to communicate in the veterinary office.
