If you have a love of animals and an interest in animal health, nursing, and husbandry, becoming a veterinary technician could be the career for you. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of veterinary technologists and technicians is expected to grow much faster than average through 2014. It attributes this to the fact that pet owners are becoming more affluent and willing to pay for advanced care because many of them consider their pet to be part of the family.*

    Program Objectives

The Associate of Occupational Studies in Veterinary Technology program focuses on the handling and health care management of a variety of species including—though not limited to—cats, dogs, exotics, lab animals, horses, cattle, small ruminants, and birds. The program provides you with both the classroom and clinical experience that you will need to apply for an entry-level position as a veterinary technician. Graduates of the program may be eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Examinations.†

    Career Opportunities

Upon graduation, you will be awarded an Associate of Occupational Studies degree which will allow you to apply for entry-level positions in the following settings:

    • Veterinary Offices
    • Emergency clinics
    • The Humane Society
    • U.S. Department of Agriculture
    • Federal and state fish and game departments
    • Producers of lab animals
    • Research institutions
    • Pharmaceutical manufacturers

    * U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2006-2007 Edition.

† Although the program is designed to prepare students to take various certification or licensing exams, the College cannot guarantee students will pass those exams. In some cases, field experience may be necessary to be eligible to take or successfully pass the exams.
